A photograph of an older man purchased in Kingman, Arizona. It is from the Tillotson & Thompson studio of Norfolk, Nebraska. On the back written in pencil is "Uncle Gottlieb Kimmerle." A second photo from the Hoyer studio, also of Norfolk. On the back is written in pencil "Jake Ritter Grandma Kimmerle's sister Carrie's son."
Norfolk is in Madison County in the eastern side of the state. Pierce County is located immediately to the north.
I searched for Gottlieb in the 1900 census. He showed up in Blaine, Pierce County living with his brother and nephew:
Kimmerle, John head b. Feb 1837 Germany farmer
Kimmerlie, George son b. Sept 1871 Germany farm laborer
Kimmerle, Gottlieb brother b. July 1840 Germany farm laborer
Rhode, Caroline daughter b. Jan 1873 widow b. Germany
Rhode, George H. grandson b. Nov 1893 Nebraska
Rhode, Bertha H. granddaughter b. July 1895 Nebraska
Wagner, Michael laborer b. Apr 1870 Germany farm laborer
All five German immigrants reported they had come to the United States in 1881. John, George (listed as Gottlieb), and Caroline are listed as arriving on the Rotterdam on 31 May 1881 in New York City, but Gottlieb is not listed with them.
Gottlieb died on 13 March 1904 in Pierce County. The Pierce County Call reported on 18 March 1904 (page 8): Gottlieb Kimmerle died at his home south of town Sunday at the age of 65. He was unmarried and lived with his brother in later years. Funeral services were held in the German Evangelical church by Rev. Fueherer, of Norfolk, Tuesday, the 15th.
Jacob Ritter was living in Logan, Pierce County in June 1900, living with the Belty Gwelberth[?] family and working as a hired man (a farm laborer). He came to the United States in 1892.
Ritter, Jacob Hired man b. Feb 1876 Germany
I wasn't able to find anything else on this man.
