Can I identify these women?
Photo number 1 is from the L. N. Wade Artist, Lapeer, Michigan. In red pen on the front is "Your friend Mate M. Royall" and on the back H. C. Selleck, Utica Mich. I checked on the historic Michigan photographer website to see when L. N. Wade was in business. Lucius N. Wade operated his studio in Lapeeer from 1866 to 1875. Lapeer is in Lapeer County. Utica is in Macomb County.
Mate M. Royall.
I then searched the 1870 census for Michigan for the surname Royall. Only one person by that name was listed, a 12-year-old boy named Douglas Royall. I then searched for the name Royal. None of the 24 entries seemed likely and none were from either Lapeer or Macomb Counties. I also looked at Selleck and did not find anyone with the same exact initials.
The second photograph is the B. L. Johnson Photographer studio, Goderich and Lucknow, Lucknow Branch, Two Doors East of the Whitely House. On the back in pencil is "Mrs. Kenneth Hunter." A search for "Goderich and Lucknow" indicates these are towns in Canada. My Canadian research skills are non-existent, so she remains a mystery.
Mrs. Kenneth Hunter.
Third photograph is from the Rentschler studio, located at the corner of Main and Huron Streets in Ann Arbor, Michigan. J. Frederick Rentschler operated his studio there from 1890 to 1931. On the back in pen is written "Katherine R. George June Nineteen hundred."
Katherine George.
I searched the 1900 census for the surname George for Ann Arbor. No matches for Katherine (one man named Harry George). I searched for a Katherine George in Michigan. There were three matches. One was born in 1889, too young. One was born in 1865, I thought that was too old. The third was a Katherine George born in June 1877, wife of Charles, resident of Detroit. Her husband was 30 years older. I am not sure this is the same woman. Ann Arbor is the location of University of Michigan, and attracts many people from out-of-state.
Fourth photograph is from the H. C. Rath studio at 930 College Avenue in Appleton, Wisconsin. Appleton is in three counites- Outagamie, Calumet, and Winnebago. On the back in blue pen is "Mrs. Jacobina (William) Mueller" and "Ed's Mother." I searched the census records and public family trees, and could not find any matches. Finally I did a search for Jacobina, William, Wisconsin." Three results popped up, the third was from History of Washington and Ozaukee Counties, Wisconsin (page 569). William Mueller, undertaker, was married to Miss Jacobina Hofman in Germany on 22 August 1864. The couple had eight children, the youngest was Edward.
Jacobina (Hofman) Mueller.
On the 1880 census the family was listed as:
William Mueller, 42, head, furniture store
Jacobene Mueller, 42, wife, keeping house
Maria Mueller, 15, daughter
Ott Mueller, 13, son
Maria Mueller, 12, daughter
Adolph Mueller, 9, son
Katherine Mueller, 8, daughter
Augustus Mueller, 6, son
Wilhelm Mueller, 4, son
Edward Mueller, 1, son
Despite having all these children, the couple showed up in Ancestry Family Trees twice, and then only their names were listed.
The fifth photograph was from the Williams studio of Rensselaer, Indiana. Rensselaer is in Jasper County. On the back is written in pencil "Cora Wasson Nowels." I searched census records for "Cora Nowels" in Indiana and quickly five entries came up. All a female living in various places, including Jasper County, in Indiana.
Cora (Wasson) Nowels.
Cora (Wasson) Nowels was born on 27 November 1870 in Indiana and died on 22 December 1947 in Columbia City, Whitley County, Indiana. She was married to Arthur Smith Nowels. She is buried in Greenhill Cemetery in Columbia City.
