I returned to the antique store and sorted through the rest of their piles of photographs. I spent about $102 total on them. There was a set from Madison, Wisconsin that were University of Wisconsin students from 1893 through 1896.

The first ten photos are from the Curtis studio of Madison. The first photo is marked on the back "W. F. Stiles UW 93 Lake Mills Wis."  Lake Mills is in Jefferson County. The 1921 University of Wisconsin alumni directory, available on Ancestry.com, lists him as Wilbur F. Stiles "B.S.A. 93. Farmer. Lake Mills, Wis." Lake Mills is in Jefferson County.  The 1920 census for Waterloo, Jefferson County lists him with wife Irene (Simmons) and five children- Dwight, Hugh, Russell, John, and Laura. Findagrave indicates he was born in 1866 and died in 1957. He was buried in Rock Lake Cemetery in Lake Mills.

Wilbur F. Stiles, '93.

The second photograph is marked in black ink on the back "Chas. C. Parlin, Brodhead, Wis. U.W. '93." I searched  for Charles Parlin in Wisconsin in the US censuses. He shows up in 1880 living in Brodhead, Green County, Wisconsin with his mother Harriet B. Parlin and his older sister Clymena Parlin. In 1910 he was still in Brodhead living with wife Daisy, children Clarence, George, and Ruth; his mother Harriett B. Parlin, and a servant.

On Findagrave he is listed as Charles Coolidge Parlin, born 18 February 1872 in Wisconsin, was married to Daisy Rosette Blackwood, and died on 15 October 1942 in Fort Lauderdale, Broward County, Florida. He was buried in Valley View Cemetery in Ticonderoga, Essex County, New York.

Charles Coolidge Parlin, '93.

The third Curtis studio photograph has written in black ink on the back "Herbert M. Haskell, Ft. Atkinson, Wis., U.W. '93." Fort Atkinson is also in Jefferson County. On the 1880 census, Herbert was living with his father Stephen C. Haskell and sister Rebecca Haskell. By 1900 he was living with his wife Jennette M. in Oregon, Dane County, Wisconsin. He died in Los Angeles County, California on 24 April 1934. He has a Findagrave entry but the cemetery location is unknown. I searched newspaper.com and found several obituaries, which have photographs taken when he was older.

Long Beach Press-Telegram, 24 April 1934, page 1, column  3.

Long Beach Sun, 25 April 1934, page 3, column 4.

The fourth photograph has "B. Stanchfield U.W. '94" and the Greek letters "ϕΓΔ" indicating he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. I searched the surname Stanchfield in Wisconsin in the US censuses. There were 12 entries, including two men whose name started with B. One was Bart, the other Barkley (which turned out to be a misspelling of Bartley). Bartley's entry included links to University of Wisconsin alumni listings, which indicate he had a B.S. and M. E. from 1894. Bartley King Stanchfield was born on 2 October 1872 in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, and died there on 27 February 1919. He was married to Olga Wilke and the couple had a son Charles Bartley Stanchfield. He does not have a Findagrave entry. An article in The Capitol Times (Madison, WI) on 17 May 1927 indicates he was a founding member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity there.

Bartley King Stanchfield, '94.

The same article indicates that Willard S. Overson was another founding member. The fifth photo has on its back "Yours in dear old ϕΓΔ Willard B. Overson U.W. 94" Willard B. Overson was born in 1972 and died in 1951. He was buried in the Riverview Cemetery in Williston, Williams County, North Dakota. He was married in 1906 in Whiteside County, Illinois to Emma Alice Dillon. In 1900, he was co-editor of the Williston Graphic.

Willard B. Overson, '94.

The sixth photo has on the back in pen "Robert L. Holt U.W. '95 Mu Chapter of  ϕΓΔ Madison Wis." and "Waukesha Wis." Waukesha was in Waukesha County. Holt was also a founding member of the fraternity. Ancestry Family Tree reveals that Robert Lincoln Holt was born on 4 July 1873 in Racine, Wisconsin, was married to Leda Marie Crocker, and died on 1 April 1952 in Wausesha. He was buried their in Prairie Home Cemetery.

Robert Lincoln Holt, '95.

The seventh photo has on its back in black ink "Yours in ϕΓΔ A. B. Schuette '95 Manitowoc Wis." I searched Ancestry Family Tree for people surnamed Schuette born in 1873 + 2 years. Among them was Albert B. Schuette, born on 14 March 1874 in Manitowoc, Manitowoc County, married Anna Hentscher, and died from pneumonia (apparently Spanish Flu) on 26 May 1919 in Manitowoc. He is buried in Evergreen Cemetery there.

Albert B. Schuette, '95.

The eighth photo has on its back in black ink "Albert Ralph Hagler U.W. '96 Mu chapter Phi Gamma Delta  Sterling, Ill." Sterling is in Whiteside County. I am unsure about the spelling of the last name. I searched Hagler, Hayler, Hazler, Hay*, and Hag* and failed to locate a match for this man. I also searched first name Albert. Similarly, I could not find entries on Findagrave or newspapers.com that matched.

Albert Ralph Hagler, '96.

The ninth photo has on its back in black ink "Bertha Bleedorn U.W. 94." The last name could be Bludorn. I searched for Bertha Bludorn on census records and an entry from 1920 for a woman born about 1870 in Wisconsin came up. In that year she lived in Janesville, Rock County, Wisconsin and was single. Links to other records indicate Bertha Bleedorn was born in 1868 and died on 27 January 1933 in Wisconsin. She was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Janesville. She was listed in the University of Wisconsin alumni directory for 1921 as having received a B. L. in 1894 and an M. L. in 1899. That year she lived in Janesville and worked as a teacher.

Bertha Bleedorn, '94.

The tenth photo has on its back in black ink "Dena Lindley U.W. '94." The 1921 University of Wisconsin alumni directory indicates she received a B. L. in 1894, was a librarian, and lived in Waunakee, Wisconsin. In 1930 she lived in Wausau, Marathon County, Wisconsin, working at the county library. Findagrave indicates she she was born on 25 December 1872 and died on 26 April 1957. She was buried in the Kingsley Cemetery in Waunakee. Her obituary in The Capitol Times on 29 May 1957 (page 3) indicate she died in Palmetto, Florida.

Dena Lindley, '94.

The eleventh photo is from the Walter Mason studio on Central Avenue in Marshfield, Wisconsin. Marshfield is in Wood and Marathon Counties. On the back in black pen is "F. M. Jackson, Monroe, Wis. U. W. '93." I searched the US censuses for 1880 and 1900, and failed to find an appropriate entry. They I searched the 1921 University of Wisconsin alumni directory on Ancestry and quickly located him "Frederick Morris Jackson, B.A. 93. Attorney. Hettinger, N.D." On the 1930 census he was living in Hettinger with his wife Anna C, (Fitzgibbon), his children Marion, Morris, and Arlie Mae, and his father-in-law John J. Fitzgibbon. He was working as a general practice lawyer. His death certificate states he was born on 22 June 1868 at Broadhead, Wisconsin, and died on 6 September 1937. Findagrave reveals that he was born in 1866 and died in 1937. He was buried in Colby Cemetery in Colby, Clark County, North Dakota.

Frederick Morris Jackson, '93.

The twelfth photo is from Groh's studio at 502-504 Eighth Street in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. On the back in pen is "Theo Benfey, Sheboygan, U.W. '93." On the 1880 census  nine-year-old Theodore Benfey lived in Sheboygan with his parents Felix and Anna. His father was a clerk of the court. Findagrave reveals he was born on 11 June 1871 in Plymouth, Sheboygan County, was married to Lorene Heller, and died on 13 March 1935 in Sheboygan. He was buried there in Wildwood Cemetery.
