Photographs of six men. Can I find out who they are?

The first is from the C. Bau's Studio at 24-26 Federal Street in Greenfield, Massachusetts. Greenfield is in Franklin County. On the back in black ink is "4-1-'99 Lyman W. Griswold, Greenfield, Massachusetts."

I searched Ancestry Family Tree for Lyman Griswold in Greenfield. He turned out to be Lyman William Griswold, born 18 October 1869 in Watkins, Schuyler County New York, son of Theophilus Lyman Griswold and Isabelle Holden, and died on 30 January 1944 in Greenfield. He was buried in Green River Cemetery in Greenfield.

The second photograph is from the Nason & Son studio of Cleveland, Ohio. Cleveland is in Cuyahoga County. On the back in pencil is "Nelson Ebert son of Jonas Ebert."

I searched Ancestry Family Trees and found only one Nelson Ebert who was a son of Jonas. There was a Nelson D. Ebert who died on 22 February 1898 and is buried in Jackson Township Cemetery, North Jackson, Mahoning County, Ohio. He was the son of Jonas Ebert and Catherine Jane Hartman. On the 1860 census, Nelson Ebert was born circa 1860 in Ohio, was living in Jackson, Mahoning County with his parents and siblings David, Mary, Lucy, Eli, and Alva.

The third photograph is from the Wm. McComb studio of Muskegon, Michigan. Muskegon is in Muskegon County. On the back in pencil is "J. A. Van Buren." The William McComb studio operated in Muskegon between 1878 and 1905. There is a man by that name on the 1880 agricultural census for Muskegon County, but I could not find him on the population schedule.

The fourth photograph is from the McKinley Ground Floor Studio in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Oskaloosa is in Mahaska County. On the front in pencil is written "Simon N. Hester." On the back in blue ink is "Simon Hester (Tom & Emelines Son)" and in pencil "1900 Penn College."

I searched for Simon Hester son of Thomas on Ancestry Family Trees. He was listed as Simon Newlin Hester, born 11 May 1876 in Vermillion Meeting, Vermillion County, Illinois, son of Thomas Cook Hester and Emeline M. Newlin, and died on 17 June 1945 in Earlham, Madison County, Iowa. He was buried in Maple Hill Cemetery in Plainfield, Hendricks County, Indiana.

The fifth photograph is from the O'Donnell studio of Menominee, Michigan. Menominee is in Menominee County. On the back in red pencil is "Burt Wilber" and in black ink is "Bert Wilber Kansas." John J. O'Donnell operated his photography studio in Menominee between 1884 and 1895.

Of course, there is no surviving 1890 census for Michigan, so I could not look for him there. There were males named Bert Wilber/Wilbur who lived in Kansas, but they appeared to be too young. Currently the identity of the man is unknown.

The sixth carte de vista is from the G. W. Clark, Photographer studio of Ionia, Mich. On the back in pencil is "Willis Galloway Ionia Co. Mich." George Clark had a studio in Ionia between 1869 and 1900.

I searched for a Willis Galloway living in Ionia County in the Federal census. He was listed on the 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses. Willis was born circa 1852, probably the son of Barnabus D. and Helen L. Galloway.  His memorial on Findgrave indicates he was born on 25 October 1852 in Palo, Ionia County, and died on 9 September 1920 from chronic interstitial nephritis. He is buried in Palo Cemetery in Palo.

An obituary appeared in the Adrian Daily Telegram on 10 September 1920:

Willis W. Galloway, NEW COMER TO ADRIAN, DIES THURSDAY.

The death of Willis W. Galloway aged 68 years, occurred at 12 o'clock last night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. B. C. Halstead, 135 North McKenzie Street. Death was due to heart trouble from which he had suffered for the past three years.

Mr. Galloway was a resident of Mesick in Wexford County, where he had farmed for a number of years before coming with Mrs. Galloway to Adrian four months ago to make their temporary home with Mr. and Mrs. Halstead.

Besides his wife and one daughter, Mr. Galloway is survived by three grandchildren, Mrs. Neva Fearnley of Flint, Miss Beatrice Halstead of Pontiac and Lynn Halstead of Adrian and great grandchildren, Dale and Jeanette Fearnley.

The body will be taken to Palo, Ionia County Saturday where funeral services will be held and burial made in the cemetery at that place.

Four out of six isn't bad!
