I purchased a pile of photographs from an antique/retro store in Tucson.

On the back of one photo in blue ink is "Axley & Mae McKinley[,] Joretta's grand parents."

I searched all records on Ancestry.com and immediately identified the couple. 

Axley Gimore McKinley was born on 17 February 1867 in Indiana, son of James McKinley and Nancy A. Landry.[1] On 11 August 1870, Axley H. lived with his parents James and Nancy A. McKinley and siblings Joseph L., William, Marietta, Jesse, Jane E., and Hannah D. in Mount Pleasant Township, Delaware County, Indiana. His father was a farmer.[2]

In June 1880, Axley was living with his parents James and Nancy McKinley in Mount Pleasant, Delaware County, Indiana and siblings William B., Emma J., Hannah D., and Samuel A. His father was a farmer and Axley was a farm laborer.[3] 

Axley was married on 4 October 1891 in Delaware County, Indiana to May Snodgrass. Mary Elizabeth "Mae" Snodgrass was born on 15 October 1869 in Delaware County, Indiana, daughter of George B. Snodgrass and Rebecca Lee. On 10 August 1870, Mary E. lived with her parents George B. and Rebecca Snodgrass and sister Zella O. in Mount Pleasant. Her father was a farmer and her mother was keeping house.[4] On 1 June 1880, May lived with her parents and sister Zella in Mount Pleasant. She and her sister had attended school in the last year.[5]

On 23 June 1900, Axley and Mary E. McKinley and children Ruby E. and Minnie H. lived in Mount Pleasant. Mary reported that she had had three children, two were living. Axley was a farmer.[6]

In April 1910, Axley and May lived with his brother Samuel A. McKinley in Mount Pleasant. Their children Ruby E., Minnie H., Axley Jr., and James E. lived with them. Axley and Joseph were farmers.[7]

On 14 January 1920, Axley G. and Mae E. McKinley and their children Winifred, Axley Jr., Jessica E.; as well as mother-in-law in Rebecca E. Snodgrass lived in Mount Pleasant, Delaware County, Indiana. They owned their home. Axley worked as a farmer.[8]

Mae’s mother Rebecca E. Snodgrass died on 11 April 1927 in Mount Pleasant.[9]

On 17 April 1930, Axley and Mary E., their son Axley G. Jr., and his wife Winnie R. lived in Mount Pleasant Township. They owned their home and had a radio. The two men were general farmers.[10]

In 1940, Axlie and Mae, their son Axlie Jr. and his wife Winnie, and that couple’s daughters Winnie and Joretta lived in Mount Pleasant Township. They owned their farm, valued at $2,500.[11]

Axley died from a pulmonary embolism on 4 August 1949 at the Ball Memorial Hospital at Muncie, Delaware County, Indiana.[12] He was buried in Jones Cemetery.

Mae died from a cerebral hemorrhage on 11 April 1954 at the home of her son Axley in Yorktown, Delaware County, Indiana. She was buried in the Jones Cemetery.

The couple were the parents of seven children:

1). Leo S. McKinley (1896-1896)

2). Ruby E. McKinley Fraizer (1897-1973)

3. Minnie Hester McKinley Hofherr (1900-1986)

4. Winifred McKinley (1902-2001)

5. Axley G. McKinley (1904-1979)

6. James Edgar McKinley (1908-1927)

7. Bernice M. McKinley (1911-1912)

As noted, the Joretta mentioned on the back of the photo was the daughter of Axley McKinley, Jr.
