Two photos. Who are they?

The first is from the Elite Studio at 818 Riverside Avenue, Spokane, Washington. Spokane is in Spokane County. On the back in black pen is "Edna G. McKenzie, Taken June 04" and "Remember me when you have yours taken won't you?"

This was easy. I searched for an Edna McKenzie living in Spokane on the US censuses. She showed up in the 1900 and 1910 censuses. In 1900 she lived with her parents Angus and Elizabeth (McLean) McKenzie at 1127 6th Street in Spokane. She was the oldest child, with siblings Agnes, Ross, Lucile, and Kennedy. A servant Hattie Glinn and her son Theodore lived with the family. Angus McKenzie was a tie inspector with the railroad.

Linked records indicate Edna's middle name was Gertrude, she was born on 5 January 1889 in Maine, that she had married W. R. Parks on 9 July 1913 in Spokane, and that she died on 28 December 1946 in Sacramento County, California.

Edna G. McKenzie.

I found her obituary:

Sacramento Bee (Sacramento, California), 30 December 1946, page 15, column 8.

The second photograph was taken by the Hansford studio of Kansas City, Kansas. Kansas City, Kansas is in Wyandotte County. On the back in pencil is "Emma (Emeline) Bates + Emma Jean & Andrew J. Bates , Jr." and "Mrs. Rosco Rilley 4 W K C Ks PO Bethel Ks R 1" "Lady & Bust [covered by paper] Eyes D Brown Hair Black C Dark White Waist." Apparently this latter sentence was directions for a colorized version of the portrait.

I first searched for Emma Jean Bates with parents Andrew and Emma or Emeline on Ancestry Family Trees. I was unsuccessful. I then searched for an Andrew Bates with parents Andrew and Emma and an entry came up for a family from Kansas City.

Emaline "Emma" (Turner) (Ketchum) Bates was born on 26 November 1858 in North Carolina, and died on 13 December 1948 in Kansas City. She was married first to Simon W. Ketchum, who died in 1894. They had five children between 1884 and 1893. After his death she married Andrew Jackson Bates (1837-1904). He was a Confederate Civil War veteran. They had two children.

Andrew Jackson Bates, Jr. was born on 20 September 1897 in Kansas City and died there on 6 March 1981.

His sister Emma Jean Bates was born on 17 May 1899 in Kansas and died on 13 November 1992 in Tucson, Pima County, Arizona. This explains how the picture ended up in an antique store in Tucson. Emma was married first to Henry F. Schmidt and second to Russel F. Krugjohn. She is buried in East Lawn Palms Cemetery and Mortuary in Tucson.
