I recently saw a set of photos on an estate sale website here in Tucson. They were included with a lot of other material and the price was too high to purchase.

Then last weekend I came across the photos at the Gather Market and when I checked their backs, each had the people identified. So I purchased the six photos for $50 (pricey!).

Who were the Whipp family? I searched Ancestry public trees for a Thomas Whipp married to a Martha, living in Ohio. There was only one.


Thomas Schafer Whipp was born on 28 August 1856 in Montgomery County, Ohio, the son of Daniel Whipp and Elizabeth Brelsford. On 11 June 1860, Thomas lived with his parents (his father was listed as David) and siblings Adaline, Caroline, Frances A., Charles S., Jonathan, Daniel W., Ezra B., and Perry in Washington, Montgomery County, Ohio. His father was a farmer.[1] On 14 June 1870, Thomas lived with his parents and siblings Charles, Addeline, Jonathan, Daniel W., Ezra B., Elisabeth J., Mary E., and Winfield S. in Clay Township, Montgomery County, Ohio.[2]

Thomas was married on 19 March 1882 in Preble County, Ohio to Martha Ann Thomas.[3] Martha was born on 21 June 1855 in Preble County, Ohio, daughter of Lewis Thomas and Elizabeth Aikman. On 30 June 1860, Martha lived with her parents and siblings Rebecca J., Elizabeth, and Mary in Harrison, Preble County, Ohio. Her father was a farmer.[4] On 13 July 1870, Martha lived with her parents and siblings Elizabeth, Mary A., and John N. in Harrison Township.[5]  In June 1880, Martha lived with her mother and siblings Libbie and Nelson in Harrison Township. She was unemployed.[6]

On 21 June 1900, Thomas and Martha A. Whipp and their children Frank J., Mary M., Edward L., and William E. lived in Harrison Township, Preble County, Ohio. Thomas was a farmer, Frank was a carpenter, and Mary and Edward were at school.[7]

On 21 April 1910, Thomas S. and Martha A. Whipp and their children Edward L., William E. lived in Harrison Township. Thomas was a house carpenter and Edward was a car carpenter.[8]

In January 1920, Thomas and Martha Whipp lived in Harrison County. Thomas was a house carpenter.[9]

On 23 April 1930, Thomas S. and Martha A, Whipp and their son William E. lived on Lewisburg in Harrison Township. Thomas was a farmer and William was a farm laborer. They owned their farm and did not have a radio.[10]

Thomas died on 9 January 1935.[11]

On 30 April 1940, Martha and her son William lived in Harrison Township. William was a truck driver. They owned their home valued at $1,100.[12]

Martha died on 6 September 1945.[13]

Thomas and Martha were buried in Roselawn Cemetery in Lewisburg, Preble County, Ohio.[14]

Thomas and Martha (Thomas) Whipp were the parents of four children:

i. FRANKLIN THOMAS WHIPP was born on 14 February 1883 in Preble County, Ohio. He was married to Dora R. Wollery. He died on 5 October 1942 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio. He was buried in Roselawn Cemetery in Lewisburg, Preble County, Ohio.[15]

ii. MARY MAMIE WHIPP was born on 17 September 1885 in West Sonora, preble County, Ohio. She was married to Altus Studebaker and Daniel Webster Osswald. She died on 6 July 1970 in Lewisburg, Preble County, Ohio. She was buried in Roselawn Cemetery in Lewisburg, Preble County, Ohio.[16]

iii. EDWARD LEROY WHIPP was born on 16 December 1888 in Lewisburg, Preble County, Ohio. He was married to Barbara Emma Bollheimer. He died on 11 December 1968 in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona. He was buried in Roselawn Cemetery in Lewisburg, Preble County, Ohio.[17]

iv. WILLIAM EMERSON WHIPP was born on 3 Mat 1895 in Preble County, Ohio. He died on 18 November 1977 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio. He was buried in Roselawn Cemetery in Lewisburg, Preble County, Ohio.[18]
