Three photos from an antique store. These are members of the Sager or Sagar family based on what was written on the back.
I started with this photo. There is no studio mark. On the back is written "Lizzie & Oscar Sager"
Elizabeth "Lizzie" Bombay (Lowe) Sager and James Oscar Sager.
On Ancestry Public Trees I searched for an Oscar Sag*r with a wife Elizabeth. There was only one match, for a James Oscar Sager with a wife Lizzie/Elizabeth Lowe. According to the tree the couple had a daughter Georgian R. Sager, born about 1908 in Indiana. The tree indicates James Oscar Sager was the son of George Smith Sager and Louisa Ferrel Compton. That couple had three other children- Louretta Elfrida Sager, Mildred Earl Sager, and Pearly Edward Sager.
The 1900 census lists the couple living in Terre Haute, Harrison Township, Vigo County, Indiana:
Sager, James O. head b. April 1870 Illinois, carpenter
Sager, Lizzie wife b. June 1875 New York
The 1910 census lists the couple in Pryor Creek, Mayes County, Oklahoma:
Sager, J. OP. head 39 b. Illinois house carpenter
Sager, Elizabeth wife 34 b. New York
Sager, Georgian R. daughter 2 b. Indiana.
The second photo is from the A. T. Buel studio of Terre Haute, Indiana. It has on the back:
Mr. & Mrs. Oscar Sagar & Rochelle
Elizabeth Bombay, Sager
Could Georgian R Sager's middle name be Rochelle? I clicked on her name and in the list of records was Indiana, U.S., Birth Certificates, 1907-1940. That record reveals that Georgien Rochelle Sagar was born on 18 November 1907 in Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana, daughter of James Oscar Sagar and Elizabeth Bombay Lowe.
The third photo is from the Holloway studio of Terre Haute, Indiana. On the back is "Pearl Sager & Edith." This is James Oscar Sager's brother Pearly. According to the family tree he had a wife Edith (no surname listed). The 1930 census for Tulsa, Tulsa County, Oklahoma lists the couple with Pearl also working as a house carpenter. His Findagrave Memorial indicates he was born in 1875 and died in 1956. His wife Edith Ann's Memorial did not list her maiden name. I clicked on her name and then the Review records and the couple's 1901 marriage record from Clay County, Illinois indicates her maiden name was Spiker.
Edith Ann (Spiker) Sager and Pearly "Pearl" Edward Sager.
How did the photos end up in Arizona. I wondered if the daughter Georgian Rochelle Sager had lived here. I searched the Social Security Death Index and for the birth date 18 November 1907 and the name Georgi*n. Nothing. When I searched for Rochelle an entry for a Rochelle Kilgore who died in Arizona in 1971 came up. I went to genealogy.az.gov and searched for her death certificate. The certificate states that Rochelle Georian Kilgore was born November 7, 1907, daughter of Oscar Sager and Elizabeth Lowe. At some time after her death her family photos ended up in the hands of an antique dealer.
Always nice to solve a few mysteries.
