I paid $5 for this photograph found in a Tucson antique mall. A young woman wearing pince nez glasses with a watch hanging from a chain. A studio mark, Stafford, below her portrait. 

On the back in black ink is "Ethel Gillbert Hanson[,] Crystal's mother."

Ethel (Gilbert) Hansen

I searched Ancestry Public Trees for a Crystal who was a daughter of a man surnamed Hans*n and Ethel Gilbert. Only one person showed up.

Ethel May Gilbert was born on 4 July 1892 in Illinois, the daughter of Thomas J. Gilbert and Lois L. Leach. She was married to Chris Jence Hansen (1885-1958). The couple had five children- Bernard, Lois, Leonard, Crystal, and Norma. Ethel died on 5 April 1961 in Mazon, Grundy County, Illinois. She was buried in Brookside Cemetery in Mazon.

I purchased a box of photos at an estate sale here in Tucson for $20. Very few of the photos had names on them, but luckily there were a set of letters written in 1927 that identified them as belonging to the Henry Colt family. A photo with minimal information. Can I identify the family? I purchased a lot of photos from an estate sale auction. This one was in a modern frame. I could see the photographer's studio mark- E. J. STONE, DEXTER, MICH. When I removed the photo from the frame, I found TODD FAMILY on its back. Who were these people? I went to the Directory of Early Michigan Photographers available online here . Examining the photograph, the family appears to have been, arranged by age: 1). Adult male (father) 2). Adult female (mother) 3). Oldest child- male 4). Second oldest child- male 5). Two more photographs. They are by the C. A. Carlson studio at 1509 Fifth Street in West Superior, Wisconsin. The first has written in black ink on the back is "Mr. & Mrs. Matson." The scone has written in black ink on the back "The Matson children September 1895." So I started by looking at the 1900 census for Douglas County, Wisconsin where West Superior is. There were 27 Matsons. There were four heads of households. None of them had five children. I then searched Matsons throughout Wisconsin, and found that there were 572. I checked the counties bordering Douglas County- Bayfield, Burnett, Ashland, and Washburn- and failed to find any matches. So these people will remain unidentified for now.
